Midwifery project "Barbara"

Midwifery project "Barbara"

As a young woman, Barbara Steck Cullen, a Salvationist from Zurich,  completed a six-week internship at the Salvation Army Hospital Chikankata. She then trained as a nurse and later became a midwife. She accompanied more than 2000 mothers in Zurich and in her later home in Melbourne during childbirth, instructed, advised and cared for them with great empathy and expertise, and helped their babies into the world. Much too early, the mother of two sons was called home at the end of July 2022 after a serious illness, which she endured with dignity and great bravery without complaint.

With the midwifery project "Barbara" we commemorate Barbara Steck Cullen and make help and support possible where she was able to gain her first experience in the nursing profession as a young woman.

The midwifery project "Barbara" in Chikankata is her legacy.
