In Zimbabwe the family is the most important social network. Old people without a family are the exception. They have either lost their families because of AIDS or immigrated from neighbouring countries many years ago to earn money in Zimbabwean mines. When they became old they were laid off without any retirement plan. Nobody cares for old people without family in Zimbabwe .... apart from for example the Bumhudzo Hospital Home of the Salvation Army.
The Bumhudzo Hospital Home has space for about 55 pensioners. In the hospital department there would be space for another 55 people, but alltogether there are only 75 persons. There's no money for anymore people.
The Salvation Army of Zimbabwe pays about 5‘900 US-Dollars per quarter to the home which just about covers the salaries of the nursing staff for one month. For this reason the hospital department is mostly closed. The Bumhudzo Hospital Home ist therefore dependent on external financial help. To keep the costs down vegetables are grown in the home and rabbits and other animals are bread.
Another problem are the sanitary installations and the water supply. The home has its own waterpump which however is not working correctly anymore. New equipment is despirately necessary. The project is ready, only the money, 8'500 USD is missing.
We would like to encourage you to help preserve Bumhudzo Hospital Home, thus giving people without a future daily nourishment, primary health care and a human surrounding.
